| An example of IFR briefing ( with Fly!) by Koala Articles |
We will now use all the things we've learned in the previous pages.
To do so, we'll prepare a flight from Paris to Nice ( that someones may like ) with a SID departure, a STAR arrival and circling before arriving in Nice, with the great Beechcraft B200 ( it'll be a little longer than with another plane but we'll have more time to handle all the things to do and we won't be able to use the GPS ! ).
Let's prepare the flight :
- Met : BKN 4000 ft; OVC 7500 ft and apply some wind : 280° / 12 kts.
- Let's plan the flight : departure LFPO at 15h00, arrival LFMN. And add all the intermediate stations and turning points with the altitude and speed informations, without forgetting the exercices.
- Taking off at LFPO at 15h00 using the SID NEV 7P reserved to propeller planes (taking off runway 25 or 26)
- Climb FL 170 to NEV (VOR 113.40)
- Proceed CMF (VOR 114.35)
- Distance measurement exercice abeam Montluçon (NDB 335) without leaving the track.
- Proceed over MEN (VOR 115.3)
- Semi-variation exercice to fly onto the departure QDM from the Mediterranee VOR station ( in fly! )
- Descend to FL 130
- Proceed Mediterranee (VOR 114.45) and continue to descend to FL 110
- Proceed Martigues (VOR 117.30)
- Proceed Marseille (NDB 406)
- Descend 5000 ft direct LUC (VOR 113.00) to start the LUC 3 STAR.
- Proceed to DRAMO, IAF of the final approach (careful iit is a reporting point and not a station !)
- Start the circling procedure runway 22L with the "NC" NDB (338) and " NI" DME (ch 36 Y, i.e. 119.95 : ILS frequency of the runway 22R).
In the real world a flight plan has to be filed.
In Fly!, we use the flight planner ( normal isn't it ?). It enables to
authorise the autopilot to use the GPS.
Don't use this function in this flight, only if you're sure, it
would be too easy !
Don't forget to carefully enter all the right informations in the planner, as Fly! uses them quite well.
Then print the flight plan, you may have to use it during the flight.
We'll be doing a lot of navigation, more than in a normal flight, but it will help us to learn different situations with the wind.
As we'll be flying, we'll discover the procedures and the little things that makes an IFR flight : following the procedures, descending at certain points, the checking of our position without using the fly! tricks !, knowing when to turn to the desired points, what the wind do to your flying and how to handle it, etc, while discovering the specialized vocabulary ( MVI or circling, dct, how to know which kind of station we're using.
I advise you to download the different maps and to study them a little before taking off :
- The map of Orly
- At least, the departure SID map
- The low altitude map of France (or have a look at the vectorial map in Fly! but not during the flight !)
- The LUC 3D STAR procedure and the rwy 22L MVI or bluebay (other kind of arrival procedure)
- The map of Nice
In a general way, you can find in the "link" section of Simvoll-Fly! different sites where you can find different aeronautical documents (SID, STAR, arrivals). Databases of waypoints, VOR, NDB, ILS, COMM, are in the "Pack France" created by the ROTW, and on AVSIM for other countries.
Now let's have a look to complete flight
