Preparation of VFR flight

Presentation

When we stay in our prefered armchair, we can Fly! here and there, no controlers will borrow us. In the real world, obviously, it is not the same thing, and it preferable for our security.
It is very interesting, for personnal training as well as for our pleasure, to create flignt conditions closer to reality.

This is exactly what we shall try to do here.

Getting and reading documents

First, consult our special page "documentation" containing links towards the available on-line documentation, information concerning numerous countries is available.

In France, the SIA (Service de l'Information Aéronautique) gives this information, refer to VAC maps heading: look for an important airport (Nice, Marseille, Lyon-Saint Exupéry) or a military airport (Chateaudun, Orléans, Cognac) and looks at pages dedicated to progresses and to VFR reporting points.

These "VFR waypoints" are visible in Fly! on the condition of creating them. You can notice that their color is orange, to distinguish them from the other waypoints. To be noticed: from now on Didier's "DAFIF" updates integrate VFR points.

If you send us your own waypoints in the form of dex file, we will integrate them into the next updates!

VFR maps legible in Fly! contain also information, but, obviously, it isn't regularly updated; thus in case of doubt, on-line SIA information is the most recent.

Trick: with the reader ER Viewer (refer to the page "Maps" by our specialist Gilles), it's possible to open a map without launching Fly!, that can serve.

More than 1500 VFR waypoints for:
- the totality of France (thanks, Serge),
- the totality of Denmark,
- the totality of Italy and Malta (thanks, Daniele),
- the totality of Austria (thanks, Harald),
- the totality of Great Britain,
- the totality of the USA (only the waypoints defined by their lat/lon coords),
and a first series of German, Spanish (including Canary Islands), Sloven and Swiss airports !

How to use VolNav

VolNav, as we saw it, is an extraordinary tool, as he allows to prepare and to save a flight plan for Fly II, with all the available helps (airports, navaids, waypoints and airways), but also to add VFR waypoints which we will have prepared by means of navigation maps and keyed into our data bases by means of VolEdit.
All in all, it's the absolute dream, as we reconstitute in our preferred simulator the real flight conditions.
Above all, if it isn't already made, install VolNav and VolEdit, and study carefully all instructions which accompany them, you will not regret it!

You will find, into the "lisez-moi" or "read-me" file which accompanies the VFR waypoints file already created, all the necessary information for waypoints creation. You can save yours in the form of a dex file.
Obviously it's desirable that each one creates some VFR waypoints for the Fly! community.

Examples:

The best is to have a look at two technically interesting examples, they are somewhat complex, we are faraway from a "straight on flight".

- example 1 : flight from Brest to Quimper - (as soon as possible)
From Brest-Guipaves airport, we will take a VFR way in order to leave the airport area, then we will reach Quimper area, also through a VFR way. A short flight but very interesting.

- exemple 2 : flight from Gap to Cannes - (as soon as possible)
VFR Navigation in the French Alps. We shall learn many useful things for a fair flight management.

And when we are able to do all that well, we will deal with controlled VFR !
