ROTW: Piper PA19 (SuperCub type)

by Jean Sabatier, Laurent Claudet, TJ, Jean-Paul Mes and René Birot
 for Fly! II

As expected, after the fantastic PA28, the ROTW takes up the work again to present us a second little wonder: the PIPER PA19.

Like for the Warrior, we find in the conception of this plane the same team:

- TJ for the panel and all the interior views (fixed and animate)
- Laurent for the "dynamic" part of the panel and for the creation and the adjustement of the flight model specific to the aircraft as well as animations in 3D of the joystick and lateral levers
- Jean our 3D specialist who polished up us an aircraft which is a delight for the eyes
- René, provider of all the photographic and technical information, responsible of the flight tests (real and virtual)

In this group a mascot which gently installed on board has been added: "Teddy Boer".

The PA19 is the "civilian" version of the Piper L18C of the American Army. These planes have been resold to the French state and it is the Rennes aeroclub which made the necessary to get its civilian certification and the new PA19 name by Piper Aircraft Corporation. The origin aircraft is the Piper J3 equipped of an engine of 65 cv with the heads of cylinders exceeding on both sides the cap.

This aircraft which still exists under this version or under other versions being able to have a motorization more or less powerful (PA18 Cub with an engine of 135 cv, PA18 SuperCub with an engine of 150 cv), some flaps, some skis in the Mountain clubs like Annemasse or Megève, is still very active in our country. It is true in the end of the World War II, the French state, in its will to make the aviation a popular sport, gave them or almost. That changed !

The interest has the pilots for this aircraft, as well as its hourly price often the less important of the fleet of a club, it's its piloting.
It is a classic gear with a metal structure and in sails. It is very sensitive to lateral wind in the phases in ground and necessitates a piloting "with feet" (translate with the rudders) of all moments. The most modern aircraft like the PA28, make lose us this habit, and the first rollings are often "delicate".
The ROTW wished we find this sensibility in the flight model, so be careful to the wind ! The adjustement has been made with a specialist pilot, Claude Panetier, proof of quality: it is not an aircraft for novices ! But once in the air, if it is not very fast, it is a pleasure of sweetness and its big glass surfaces as well as its high wing, make see you the earth in "pink" ! (warning like in glider, a hat is recommended in the sun, the roof is entierely glazed).

Its technical features are the following:

Engine:    - Continental O200A of 100 cv in 2750 tr/mn, rotation hourly way, metal propeller in fixed step Sensenich M76AK-2-42
               - Nominal speed: 2475 tr/mn, takeoff: 2625 tr/mn, idling speed: 600 tr/mn
               - In cruise, it is inadvisable to go down under 1700 tr/mn (icing of the carburetor)

Speeds (the tachymeter is calibrated in km/h):

Vne

Vno

Vc

Vp

188 km/h

144 km/h

141 km/h

161 km/h

Of course, it is accompanied with a manual which allows you to handle better the devices not always usual that you will find.

Bonus: The ROTW wished also to provide with the PA19 a share of news which, but it is not useful to recall it, demonstate the extraordinary potential of Fly! II.
- in normal view of the panel, the joystick is mobile

- the indicators, in lateral views, are for the majority, active
- the rear horizontal plan is doubly mobile: with the Trim (complete plan) and with the joystick (ailerons)

- a "wide angle" of the panel with active dials has been added
- two dynamic cameras (but we can change it only one time) are provided: one which simulated the pilot's look (front place, we see even its nose !), the other the passenger (rear place)

pilot camera

passenger camera

- the very particular devices of this aircraft are all in their place and active (even the curious battery and parking brake levers)
- the dials have been remade to correspond to the real model, in front view, the joystick is mobile
- the head of the pilot turns to follow his turns, and his arms moves the joystick

in the axis

all on the left

all on the right

Now let's do a turn of the owner in several screenshots (you will find all the views in the manual):

ROTW: Piper PA19, additional files for the update n° 1

by Laurent Claudet, Jean Sabatier, TJ, René Birot and Claude Panetier
 for Fly! II

We indicated in the release of the PA19 the work on this aircraft goes on. Here is the result:

1- a great first in Fly!: new interior "pilot" camera with "dynamic" panel, the main instruments have their hands active (4 instruments), the right hand of the pilot moves with the joystick, the left with the engine throttle. It becomes possible to pilot and control his flight with this camera, and sensations it brings are really... sporty ! To try at all costs.
Be careful, we can have only one active "ROTW" camera by aircraft, choose well.
Read also attentively the documentation provided with (Lisezmoi or Readme file). The circular view of the cockpit (simulating the pilot's look) is made with the 4 arrows of the central keyboard.
The use of "ROTW" cameras can, in certain cases bad defined, be incompatible with the presence of other cameras of TRI. Laurent advices you to disable certain cameras in using the camera.txt file provided (to put in the Fly! II Data folder).

A restriction: cameras being provided in the form of DLL, they don't work on Mac. Moreover, certain display defaults persist because of the full screen magnification of the small interior image of the 3D model.

2- another great first in Fly!: new control module of engine working for PC and for MAC (in Python !).
Laurent created in the form of DLL (for PC) and of PYC (program written in Python for PC and for Mac) a module imposing to respect the correct working conditions of the engine on pain of breaking it:
    - correct oil temperature before taxing and increasing the power
    - correct takeoff temperature
    - soft action of the engine throttle
    - correct heads of cylinder temperature if power increase after a long descent in idling speed
    - correct use of the heating carburetor

The sanction, before the definitive breakage of the engine (more than 15.000 euros the engine): click on the link below.
