The Alps of Gap in photorealistic textures

by TJ (ROTW) and Béralex (ROTW)

We announced you in "Projects" page, it is available, the great scenery covering all the alpine area of Gap is finished. It needed a lot of work of our specialist JP helped, to refine elevations with satellite images, by another ROTW's friend, Béralex.

As you see it, mountains have been reviewed and corrected, grassy areas, rocky, wooded are in their place, shadows improve the elevations effect on the foothills and crests.

All the important roads, highways, rivers with their secondary bed are present, such as the representation of the cultivated lands very caracteristic of the little French farms. Of course, Serre-Ponçon lake has been drawn again.

The scenery covers a region including several airfields modelized by the team: Gap Tallard, St Crépin Mont Dauhin, Aspres and also others like Sisteron and Barcelonnette. So, it is possible to do superb flights in VFR, in day as well as night (superb the lightings in mountainous area). At this intention, TJ said us: "For night flights, it is better, to have more fluidity, to decrease in the maximum the high definition radius and increase the low definition radius to benefit from lighted up distant villages".
Let's go, again a screenshot, Gap seen from sky: life is beautiful !

About the imperative actions of installation, here is an extract from the TJ's "Lisezmoi" file:
- "You must remove imperative of your Scenery/Shared folder the FranceSEv1.pod file. To continue to enjoy of the Béralex's elevations for the southeast area of the France, you must download on Simvol the Zip file named FranceSEv2. This last one contains the same elevations but compatible with the Gap scenery. I reassure you, the addition in the future of another alpine area won't oblige you to load a third time these elevations. Now, they are "podded" tile by tile in this version 2 and will have to be put in the Scenery folder directly."

But, because there is a but, it is heavy, very heavy ! So, if you haven't an ADSL connection, be patient.

The files of the V1 are no longer downloadable, see below.

The southeast Alps, new elevations and the scenery of Gap, new textures

by Beralex and TJ (ROTW)

Very big work by the "Beralex and TJ" team to adapt the previous scenery to the new SRTM elevations.
Béralex thus covered all the southeast part of this magnificent medium and high mountain area, and TJ resumed his textures to closer adapt them to the lie of the land, and this, at first, for the Gap area. Moreover, let us read what he says in his "lisezmoi.txt" file:

"...This scenery was realized on the basis of satellite photos but repainted by my care while preserving the shade of the relief.
The main roads are present as well as cities and villages. These last ones are illuminated at night. For the night flights, it is better, for more fludity, to decrease at the maximum, the high resolution radius and to increase the low resolution radius to benefit from lighted up distant villages.
The main rivers are also present so that, naturally, the Serre-Ponçon lake.
Roads and rivers stick now better with the ground. However, excuse us if it still remains some unperfectible defects..."

To realize better the progress made, here is a view of the version v1 then the version v2 in the same place:

Nothing to add, it is necessary "to live" it. So let us visit these magnificent sceneries (admire the Serre-Ponçon lake water's new colors) with this old PA19, the very famous F-BOUK from the flying club of Megève.

Oh ! if you are curious and just a little bit "adventurous", by looking well, you will discover what we could call a well hidden "Easter egg". You need to have sharp eyes, it is hidden well (some people would say "camouflaged", you will see why on the spot).
Here is a screenshot (it is outside the area "textured" by TJ, but new elevations are there very present, look, I landed in a close field):
