The Southern Alps - General organization
by Azzurro (ROTW)

The aim of this recapitulative page is to make the inventory of all creations concerning the Southern Alps.

Update January 2007

The Jura has been added, it completes our alpine set to the north.

The half-Globe tile 004_164_sud was put online.

A new version of Annemasse 3D was put online.

Update of May 2006

Here is a whole series of 5 half-globe tiles 2D sceneries, in "beta" version, always by the team TJ-Beralex from ROTW. They contain the elevations, and photo-realistic textures. However, as for the Mende 2D scenery, the colorization of the roads and rivers has not been done : if there are some volunteers, TJ will explain them with a great pleasure how to proceed to finish these 2D sceneries.

These sceneries cover all the eastern part of the Alps, on the 005 axis, from Sion in the north (Suisse) to Albenga (Italia) in the south, on the Gulf of Genova :
* Sion - 005_164 nord
* Aoste (Aosta) - 005_164 sud
* Torino (Turin) - 005_163 nord
* Cuneo (Coni) - 005_163 sud
* Albenga - 005_162 nord

It is a rather big territory, with a various relief. It is a natural complement to the existing sceneries on the French part (axis 004). Some smart raids to make on both sides of the Alps.

Access to the files : click on the map below, or on this link

Attention, read with care, at the bottom of this page, the paragraph relative to the elevations that have to be removed from "France_SE_SRTM" !

The Southern Alps region joins France, Italy and Switzerland.

It is the highest mountainous chain in Europe; it reaches 4,810 meters at Mont Blanc. It is directed from north to south up to the Mediterranean Sea where it plunges in a spectacular way.

We do not treat, here, the rest of the massif, which curves eastward. Geographers speak about "the alpine bow", very visible when we fly over the region at high altitude (for example from Nice towards north).

It is an impressive chain because of the size of its summits, the highest being snow-capped throughout the year. Glaciers are numerous, and we find there important lakes (Lake Geneva, Lake of Bourget, Lake of Annecy for the largest). Rivers and torrents contributed to sculpt a "raging" nature.

The Alps have been for a long time a natural barrier that we could cross only through some passes (refer to the episode of Hannibal crossing the Alps to invade the city of Rome).
Nevertheless, exchanges and migrations of populations were always intense between these regions situated on both side of these mountains.

Let us examine opposite the map of the whole region. The globe tile numbering allows finding the way: our zone includes the GT of abscissa 004 and 005.
When you move your mouse over the map, that displays help pop-up, and a click leads you towards the corresponding line in the table recapitulating 2D sceneries and 3D airports.

The table below allows finding all about a fixed half-globe tile, by giving every time a link towards the concerned page (2D sceneries or 3D airports). All 2D sceneries are organized by half-globe-tile, south or north.

SRTM elevations

Elevations (see below)

2D sceneries

The 2D "photo-realistic" cover is realized by TJ: basic colorization, then manual addition of roads, rivers, railroads... It is really a very nice piece of handwork, of which we do not weary because the result is startling.

3D airports

Numerous airports modelled for this region, and some are at the planning stage.
This page will be updated according to the new 3D sceneries realizations.

*For Italian airports, some conflicts may occur with other airports available somewhere else. We are preparing a specific column to resolve these problems.

**Frejus airport was closed some years ago; we maintain it all the same as a sign of dissatisfaction with this measure ;-)

SRTM elevations

The superb and indispensable "SRTM" elevations are by Beralex.
The large zone covered by the "France_SE_SRTM" elevations extends over all the southeast quarter of France, as well as on adjacent globe tiles to Italy and Switzerland (see the exact cover on the map above).

Naturally, we recommend you to install them, but be careful !
Every 2D scenery also contains elevations, often corrected, and they must no be together with the original elevations.
For the alpine 2D sceneries, it is necessary to read the enclosed explanatory file.
You must remove from the
"France_SE_SRTM" folder, located in the Fly! "scenery" directory, the elevations concerning each half-globe tile (every time, remove the .pod file and also the corresponding .scf file).
