Update principle
Fly! databases update is a very important element for our approach of simulation:
the realism of the information usable for navigation.
Every month on this page, as per the official calendar (practically in real time),
you can find the update of all worldwide navigation data, and notably those
concerning big airports.
That includes:
- Radio frequencies (COMM.POD),
- ILS (ILS.POD),
- Radio navigation aids means, VOR and NDB (NAVAID.POD),
- "En route" points (WAYPOINT.POD),
- SID & STAR (IFR departures and arrival procedures) usable with VolNav tool and
PMDG's aircraft (757 and 777).
Airports (AIRPORT.POD) and runways (RUNWAY.POD) are not included in this update
because some small differences between Fly! II coordinates and reality ones
would move taxiways in existing sceneries.
Where does this information come from? Every 28 days, AIRAC (Aeronautical Information
Regulation and Control) are released as per a very precise calendar. These data
are formatted and available for everybody thanks to NIMA (National Imagery and Mapping
Agency), well known by texture designers. They are part of a set of products dedicated
to the aviation.
The release date is included in the name, so "0403" means "3rd edition
of year 2004".
We use the DAFIF's data (Digital Aeronautical Flight Information
File), the information of which is dedicated to the USAF. All this information
is available at the following address:
http://164.214.2.62/products/digitalaero/dafifindex.cfm
(DSL is recommended!).
WARNING: this
is the last version, the free access to the server will be closed from
january 2006, the 1st.
The ROTW "touch"
However, the DAFIF's information is sometimes incomplete, or obsolete: so, we update it from
information we collect directly on national sites.
More information about these sites on this
page regularly updated (to be kept in your bookmarks) ;-)
The main changes are:
- removal of some thousands of unused waypoints,
- addition of IFR waypoints necessary to the most recent procedures,
- addition of missing beacons (terminal NDB, TACAN...),
- addition of VFR waypoints, visible as well in VolNav as in Fly! (more information on this
page),
- punctual corrections, notably erroneous ILS.
All that represents several thousands of additions!
-->Naturally, evreybody can send us data (as Daniele,
Harald or Serge did it). Please contact Azzurro.
To end, we have "recoded" the totality of waypoints so that they are unified. So instead of many different
categories, we propose no more than 3:
- "En Route" IFR waypoints,
- terminal IFR waypoints,
- VFR waypoints.
All these points are visible in Fly! (Flight planner), in VolNav and in various navigation
tools (more information on this
page). Only IFR points are visible in PMDG's planes computers, in order to reduce data display.

Solution 2:
DEX files below are to be used if you already have the DAFIF's release of the previous month
and if you want to avoid an important downloading. To import these DEX files, we use the
utility Deximport (or its variant DexImportGui.exe) by Frank Racis. Be careful,
always save the previous versions!

Addition:
In order to not lose information concerning airfields without IFR procedures (not treated by the NIMA),
we propose you additional DEX files. This information, not up to date, results from the previous works of
ROTW's members and are expurgated of possible doubloons.

The DEX files proposed above allows you to update all your POD files without deleting certain obsolete
data. On the other hand it allows to protect certain personal data you would like to keep.
Example: particular waypoints for SID or STAR.

|
And to end, if you wish to restart with a completely updated database
you can use the DEX files above with empty POD files.
